soaked

so as i wrote yesterday about the beginning of rainy season, i got caught in a TORRENTIAL downpour. like the sky just opened up. and the funny thing is africans hate the rain. they scatter. they can handle hunger, disease, and only God knows what else, but rain? run!! they seem surprised that we americans can handle getting soaked. i think they think we can't handle a lot of stuff because we're from a cushy place...like on a hot day, they'll ask me, 'oh is it too hot for you?' and i'm thinking, this is downright chilly compared to atlanta some days! but we are used to comfort, i realize that more out here than i ever have before. coming home to a hot shower is so nice. and dinner already prepared. and tv. i'm spoiled, that's all it is...i wonder if i could really go without these comfortable things for the rest of my life. is that the goal though? probably not. i mean, i don't want to fixate on material things or comfort and i feel like seeing if i can go without them may still be fixating on them, just in a different way. or maybe i just want to keep them. either way, i'm a lunatic.

the picture is allie, my niece, one of the last times i saw her. she's growing up so fast. this picture is in preparation for her 2nd birthday, in 2 months and 5 days. i'm an uncle, gimme a break...
